If you want to cook like an expert you need not make a recipe unnecessarily complicated. In Bengali there is a proverb “তিল কে তাল করা” (til ke taal kora) meaning to exaggerate something small into something big.

This traditional sweet shows how sesame (til) can transform into a beautiful dish or “thal”. It is a sesame seed candy similar to the Greek sweet Pasteli and is one of the most common traditional Bengali confections.

Ingredients

  • White sesame seeds – 3/4 cup
  • Sugarcane jaggery – 1 cup
  • Ghee (clarified butter) – 3 tsp

Directions

Boil semi-liquid jaggery on moderate heat until it thickens. Stir continuously with a ladle so air gets incorporated and the mixture becomes frothy.

Pour the hot jaggery mixture onto a greased plate and immediately sprinkle roasted sesame seeds over it. Allow it to cool slightly until it forms a solid disc known as Til Takti or sesame saucer.
